The First Sunday In Lent

Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted of Satan; Make speed to help thy servants who are assaulted by manifold temptations; and, as thou knowest their several infirmities, let each one find thee mighty to save; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

This series of Sunday classes is on selected parochial and plain sermons of John Henry Newman. There are eight published volumes of these sermons, given by Newman when he was an Anglican priest (and republished some years ago in a fine one-volume edition by Ignatius Press). We will not do them all! Fr Austin’s plan is this: each week to consider one sermon that is connected to our place in the liturgical year.

This week we look at a sermon Newman preached for the feast of Saint Matthias (which fell on February 24). Matthias, of course, is the apostle chosen to take Judas’s place. If you’d like to see in advance what Newman makes of the feast, you may read the sermon here. It’s in Parochial and Plain Sermons, vol. 2, no. 11: ‚ÄúDivine Decrees.‚Äù Whether you read the sermon or not, you’re welcome to the class.
