This Theology Talk was led by Dr. Travis LaCouter, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium).

The twentieth century played witness to a dramatic transformation in the way the Church conceived of its relationship to the wider world. As the Second Vatican Council declared solidarity with and responsibility for the “whole world,” new questions arose about how the People of God should approach secular society, spurred on by such rapid developments as globalization, decolonization, and the advent of nuclear weapons. This talk will examine one model of the Church’s engagement with the world at large–namely, dissent. What does it mean for the Church to “dissent”? What theological resources can the individual Christian draw upon when critiquing power structures? Can the Church ever really step outside the power dynamics is seeks to criticize? This talk will consider historical and theological factors of dissent and suggest some takeaways for the average Christian seeking to engage in politics today.
