The Last Sunday after Pentecost: Christ the King
Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in thy well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. (Proper 29)

Above: On the exterior of Saint Thomas Church, above the Rose Window, are the words “Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ.”
Based on the services held daily in the medieval Church, Choral Evensong as arranged in the Book of Common Prayer of the Anglican Church has been sung regularly since the Sixteenth Century. Many people who are new to worship at Saint Thomas prefer to come to Choral Evensong because it is relatively passive. The service includes readings (just as would occur at Evening Prayer) and prayers led by a priest. An anthem as well as a setting of the Magnificat and the Nunc dimittis are sung by the choir. Today’s Choral Evensong is Festal because of the Feast of Christ the King. Read more about Choral Evensong here, or view the Festal Evensong Service Card posted to the bottom of this page, where links to the webcast will be posted during and after the service.
‚ñ∫There is no Mass following Choral Evensong on Sundays. If you would like to make your Holy Communion for the week, consider attending one of the morning Eucharists, or else at any of the other eleven masses at Saint Thomas later this week.
‚ñ∫A few weeks ago, the Rector gave a sermon at Choral Evensong about Choral Evensong: what it is and why we do it. You may read or listen to that sermon here.
‚ñ∫The Rector speaks about this final week of the church year, which includes Christ the King followed by Thanksgving Day, in his Weekly Audio Message.
‚ñ∫Today is Commitment Sunday, which completes the opening phase of the 2012 Every Member Canvass, through which we raise the money to pay for the annual operating expenses of the Church and Choir School. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has pledged, and we humbly give thanks to God whose Providence sustains us all. Read more about the EMC here and consider making a pledge online. We need everyone who worships with us, including the many thousands from around the globe who have listened to at least one webcast, to consider making a pledge in support of our mission.
